Rome’s Teatro dell’Opera, Italy’s main opera house and rival to La Scala, staged a highly successful production of Tosca at the State Kremlin Palace. Tosca was written especially for the Teatro dell’Opera. The performance was held to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first performance of this opera in Russia, which took place in 1902 in St Petersburg. The production, by leading opera director Franco Zeffirelli, was first staged in 2000 to mark the 100th anniversary of Tosca’s world premiere.
The Moscow production was supported by the Russian Ministry of Culture, the Russian Foreign Ministry and Mercury.
